Alexandra Smith, a senior journalism major, is columns/calender editor on The Defender, the Saint Michael's College weekly student newspaper. The 24-page print and on-line publication is regularly filled with investigative news stories about campus issues, as well as features about college excitement, and a range of opinion pieces. Photography adorns every print page, and photo galleries and videos frequently appear in the on-line version of the paper.

Smith, daughter of Douglas Smith of Nashville and Anne Smith of Bainbridge Island, graduated from Bainbridge High School before coming to Saint Michael's, located in Burlington, Vermont, one of the top 10 college towns in America.The City of Burlington also provides good subjects for Defender stories.

According to their mission statement, The Defender editorial staff strives to accurately, professionally and ethically report the news affecting the St. Michael's community and its surrounding area. Adapting to the ever-changing state of journalism, The Defender is dedicated to creative storytelling through the use of multimedia elements including photography, audio, and video.
