Yorktown Heights resident performs in Saint Michael's major fall play--"The School for Scandal"--1960s version of an 18th C play

2009 Nov 3

Michael Fay, son of Maribeth and Michael Fay of Yorktown Heights, plays the part of Sir Benjamin Backbite in the Saint Michael's College major fall theater production, "The School for Scandal," the classic 18th Century play by Richard Brinsley Sheridan, transported into the 1960s. All productions of the show are being staged in the FlynnSpace, 147 Main St., Burlington, Nov. 4, through Nov. 7. [All performances are in the FlynnSpace because the SMC McCarthy Arts Center is being renovated.]

Fay, a first-year student exploratory major, graduated from John F. Kennedy Catholic High School before coming to Saint Michael's, a distinctive Catholic liberal arts college located in Burlington, Vermont, that provides education with a social conscience.

Director Peter Harrigan, SMC associate professor and chair of the fine arts department, described the production as "Amadeus" meets "Austin Powers." Saint Michael's cast and crew transported Sheridan's classic, comical language to the groovy milieu of the Swingin' Sixties, proving that "treachery and gossip (unfortunately) never go out of style."
